AEO Audit: Is Your Site Ready for AI Search?
October 5, 2026 · VibeShield

Run an AEO audit for crawl access, clear answers and accurate structured data. Understand what technical checks can tell you about AI search visibility.
An AEO audit reviews whether your website provides accessible, clear information that answer engines can interpret. Start with crawl access and useful answers, then separate technical readiness from evidence that an engine actually cites your site.
AEO means answer engine optimization. In this guide it describes a review process for your own public pages, not a promise to appear in every AI-generated answer.
Define what you want to measure
There are two different questions. Can an automated reader reach and interpret this page? Does an answer engine include the site in answers to a defined set of queries?
The first question involves page content, crawler rules, metadata and structured data. The second needs observations from answer engines or a visibility-tracking service, with the tested prompts, dates and conditions recorded.
Do not convert a high readiness score into a claim that your brand is frequently cited. Equally, one answer without your site does not establish that the engine cannot access it.
Check access to the intended public content
Choose a specific page and question. Confirm that the public URL loads without login and that bot protection does not replace the useful page with a challenge. Review whether the content is available in readable text.
Inspect crawler rules deliberately. Access settings for search retrieval and settings for model training can represent different purposes. Make changes according to your publication preference and the relevant provider’s documentation; do not broadly open private content to improve a score.
Google states that its AI search features use established SEO practices and do not require special AI files or special schema. Its AI features guidance also explains eligibility and the limits of indexing guarantees.
Make the page answer a real question
Imagine a product page that says only “powerful audits for modern teams.” A reader still needs to know what is tested, what inputs are required, which findings they receive and what the tool cannot establish.
Answer those questions near the relevant sections. Use a definition where a term is unfamiliar, a concrete workflow where the next step is unclear and a sourced limit where a claim could be misunderstood.
Give an educational article a distinct role. A guide about interpreting AEO checks can explain the method and link to the checker; it does not need to repeat the checker’s feature list in every paragraph.
Keep structured data consistent with the page
Structured data describes page entities in a machine-readable format. Review the organization name, preferred URL, article dates, author and image references that your template publishes.
Mark up real content and keep references reachable. A schema block that points to a missing logo or names a feature the product does not provide undermines the accuracy of the machine-readable description.
When you include questions and answers, make the same answers available to readers. Valid JSON is only a syntax check; it does not certify that the vocabulary is appropriate or that a search engine will display an enhanced result.
Treat llms.txt as an optional publication aid
If you publish an llms.txt file, keep its summary and links current. Review it as another public description of the site, rather than allowing old pricing or access claims to drift away from the product.
Its absence alone does not establish that a page is ineligible for Google’s AI search features. Prioritize accurate accessible content, useful navigation and correct indexing settings before treating the file as a universal requirement.
VibeShield’s SEO and AEO audit tool checks technical readiness. It does not measure your share of AI answers or guarantee citations. Pair it with the technical SEO audit workflow and clearly defined visibility observations if you need both.
Common questions
Can an AEO checker prove ChatGPT will cite me?
No. Technical checks and citation observations answer different questions. Record actual answers separately and treat each observation as a snapshot.
Should I rewrite every page around the acronym AEO?
Write around the reader’s question and the page’s purpose. Use the term where it helps explain the topic, without replacing specific information with repeated jargon.
